Have you ever wondered why people congregate in doorways? Take any room, no matter how
large, and, if given a choice, the spot that people will pick for conversing, socializing and doing
their business, will be in the middle of the doorway.

There are two principal theories that explain this phenomenon.

The genetic theory posits that it is because our ancestors had to guard the cave door as a matter
of survival. This compares to the present day dog who walks around in circles before he lies
down to sleep. There is no longer any grass to mat down, but years of genetic programming
compels him to continue the once useful practice. Even though prehistoric monsters are no
longer likely to pay us any unwelcomed visits, we're still programmed to hover about the door.

The other theory is called the Theory of Rectangular Energy which informs us that
"electromagnetic frequencies are converted by the direct influence of rectangular shapes". The
shape supposedly causes the door opening to act as an accumulator and converts normal
electromagnetic frequencies into a new harmonized form of energy that temporarily elevates
serotonin levels in human beings. This, obviously, makes us feel better. According to this
theory, which also explains why people in doorways are usually laughing or smiling, we could
easily end the problem of people blocking doorways by making them all round.

Most people who reject these two theories tend to believe that the reason is simply a matter of
SSP or Subconscious Self Preservation. Everyone knows that if there is a fire or a bomb, the
ones closest to the door have the best chance of escape, and thus, survival. Some people just
feel safer in the doorway.

So, the next time you see people blocking the doorway, try to understand that it's not an overt
attempt to be irritating. There are many, scientific and rational explanations for this behavior that
have absolutely nothing to do with you.
